Ireland Vs Wales
This recent match against Wales was more shocking than I expected it to be. From how Wales has been playing this Six Nations and in previous years I was almost certain Ireland would win but the fact that it was that close together was very shocking. Like other Ireland fans I was shocked when I saw that Wales took the lead at the end of the first half. This match did ultimately secure the Triple Crown title gained by beating England, Scotland and Wales and one more win towards winning the Grand Slam gained by winning all matches within the tournament. It was a match full of drama, key performances, and high stakes, leaving both teams and fans alike with plenty to reflect on.
The game began with both teams showing great intensity. Ireland struck
first, with their number 8 Jack Conan crashing over the line for an early try.
However, Wales responded strongly, with their spirited attack eventually
leading to a try from Tommy Reffell and a crucial late score, putting them
ahead 13-10 at halftime. While Ireland showed great determination, it was Wales
who looked slightly more composed in the first 40 minutes, using their home
advantage to their benefit.
In the second half, the atmosphere grew tenser. Ireland, despite the
high pressure, played with clinical precision. Fly-half Sam Prendergast proved
to be the key player of the match, contributing 17 of Ireland’s 27 points
through his accurate kicking. Prendergast’s performance was not just about
scoring but also about his tactical awareness—most notably with a brilliant
50:22 kick that set up Jamie Osborne for a crucial try, tipping the scales back
in Ireland’s favor.
Wales did not go down without a fight, however. A debutant Ellis Mee
made a significant impact for the Welsh side, nearly scoring a try in the final
minutes of the game. His effort was scrutinized by the Television Match
Official (TMO) but was ultimately ruled out, much to the disappointment of the
Welsh faithful. While Wales battled valiantly, they struggled to break through
the Irish defense in the second half.
The game turned in Ireland’s favor despite a red card for Garry
Ringrose, who was sent off in the second half for a high tackle on Wales' Ben
Thomas. With a man down, many feared that Ireland's hopes could be dashed, but
the team’s resilience shone through. Prendergast’s accurate kicking and
tactical play, combined with some solid defense, helped them control the match
in the final stages.
Former Ireland players, including O'Driscoll, were full of praise for Prendergast’s performance, and the Irish team's ability to maintain their composure under pressure. O'Driscoll's comments about Prendergast’s spiral kick were particularly notable, given the high expectations surrounding him.
Meanwhile, for Wales, interim coach Matt Sherratt saw promise despite
the loss. Sherratt praised the newcomers, including Ellis Mee and fellow
debutants Blair Murray and Tom Rogers, who injected youthful energy into the
team. The narrow defeat, while disappointing, showed that Wales is building a
strong foundation for the future.
Looking ahead, Ireland’s victory sets them up for a highly anticipated
clash with France in Dublin on March 8, 2025. This match is now critical for
Ireland’s hopes of securing a third consecutive Six Nations title and a
potential Grand Slam.
For Wales, while the result was tough to swallow, the performance left
fans optimistic for the future. The emergence of new talent and the progress
under Sherratt’s leadership suggests that Welsh rugby has a promising future,
even if this match didn’t go their way.
As the Six Nations continues, both teams have set the stage for some exciting rugby ahead, with Ireland striving for more glory and Wales looking to build on the positives from a difficult but valuable encounter.
If anyone is a fan of Man City a friend of mine is writing a blog about the on goings about the club and though I am not a supporter of the club it is still a good read you can find it at: https://allistertaggart.blogspot.com/?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAaagQjkIbxecuPJqgdchIJSVkGYQC0VfgcF_slI_0zg5oAUbGLWZOERhi08_aem_QlKqMYeHK1tFZv6sboIEqg&m=1
